A mother struggles, bereft of arm and leg

Toby Simon, director of the Bryant University Women's Center, recently returned from Haiti, where she worked as a short-term disability consultant for the Women's Refugee Commission.

While there, she met Loufin, a single mother of three who had been a street vendor in Port-au-Prince. Loufin lost an arm and a leg when she was crushed beneath concrete toppled by the January earthquake.

Indicators pointing to improvement

The Providence Journal reports that some key economic data turned in the state's favor as hospitality-related tax collections and home sales each showed positive results for extended periods of 2010. However, as Ray Fogarty, director of Bryant's Chafee Center for International Business, points out, conflicting data point to "a very, very slow recovery."

Bryant U. announces new biology major

New program focuses on integrative biology, intensive laboratory research

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Bryant University is launching a new major, the bachelor of science in biology.

What sets the Bryant biology major apart is an intensive research program that cuts across disciplines, said Jose-Marie Griffiths, Ph.D., the University's vice president for academic affairs. After working with the Department of Science and Technology faculty who teach environmental science, botany, chemistry, biotechnology and cellular biology, the biology major will work one-on-one with faculty mentors to develop an independent research project. Some of these projects may culminate in scientific papers suitable for publication or presentations at major scientific conferences.

Scholar of successful high-school-to-college transitions offers advice for parents and students

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Laurie L. Hazard, director of Bryant University's Academic Center for Excellence and a national expert on how high school students can make a successful transition to college, says the best way for high school seniors — high achievers and struggling students alike — to prepare to "make the change" to college freshman is simply by reading over the summer months.

Perhaps the biggest surprise students face when they start freshman classes "is that there's much more reading required in college," said Hazard, a psychology professor who studies and writes about student personality types and classroom success. "Parents can really help their college-bound son or daughter by encouraging them to increase their volume of reading over the summer, before classes begin," she said. "If your child is not a big reader, you should actively engage them and get them to read anything of interest to them."
