International business major lands ‘dream job’ with global retailer

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - The ink on his diploma will barely be dry when international business major Ryan Letourneau '11 sets out for what he calls a dream job: He is one of just 10 people from around the world selected to participate in the International Graduate Training Program with Delhaize Group, a global food retailer based in Brussels, Belgium.

It is the first time Delhaize has selected Americans to participate in the training program, now in its second year. Letourneau, of Holden, Mass., credits Bryant's International Business Program for giving him an edge over the 750 other applicants, most of whom have MBAs.


Bryant senior ready for public service

Bryant senior George Vasvatekis always knew he wanted to run for public office: "I think public service is important and I have always aimed to be a productive member of the community," he says.

A finance major who is minoring in political science, Vasvatekis, of Bridgewater, Mass., is running unopposed for a spot on the Bridgewater-Raynham school committee candidate. He also works as a special assistant to U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, is a part-time real estate sales agent, and helps out at his father's restaurant.

Alejandro Vando is first Bryant U. student to receive R.I. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Alejandro Vando '13, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will spend 10 weeks this summer immersed in a biochemist's world of DNA, proteins, and bacteria.

As one of 25 winners of a Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), Vando will work alongside Christopher Reid, Ph.D., an assistant professor in Bryant's Department of Science and Technology. Vando will be a partner in Reid's proteomics research. Specifically, Vando will be involved in gene amplification, a laboratory method for creating multiple copies of small segments of DNA that encode protein. He'll learn how to clone a gene and how to express, purify and begin characterization of the encoded protein. At the end of July, he will present his findings at a SURF conference.

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Communication skills - highly prized by employers - will be put to the test at Bryant University on Monday, March 28, when the University holds its 2nd annual Public Speaking Colloquium.

The final round of the speech competition, hosted by Channel 12 news anchor Mike Montecalvo, who also is an instructor in Bryant's Department of Communication, will take place from 7-9 p.m. in Stepan Grand Hall at Bryant University's Bello Center, 1150 Douglas Pike.


Bryant junior wins national fellowship to help expand her role as mentor

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  — The passion one Bryant University junior has for mentoring has been kicked up a notch thanks to a national program to help first-year college students thrive in their new surroundings.

Christina Knips '12, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., was one of just five university students from around the country to receive a fellowship to attend the 30th annual Conference on the First-Year Experience, which each year offers expert keynote speakers and workshops during which participants can share ideas, research and experiences.

Bryant team heads to finals in national accounting competition

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - A team of accounting students from Bryant University is one of five teams heading to Washington, D.C., Jan. 27-28 to compete in the national finals of xTAX, a competition sponsored by PwC.

The Bryant team - Courtney Bernard '13 of Uxbridge, Mass.; Dan Cournoyer '12 of Jefferson, Mass.; Ryan Hansen '12 of Peabody, Mass.; Cornelia Li '10 '12 MPAc of Wuhan, China; and Anthony Nader '12 of Milton, Mass. - will go head to head against teams from Brigham Young University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Houston and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The Bryant team is coached by Accounting Professor Michael Lynch.
