Tucked under the surface of a course in management principles is a passion for service learning

This video was prepared for the nonprofit Gotta Have Sole by members of Team Heart and Sole as part of their service-learning project for "Management Principles and Practice" (Management 200).

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Watch a homeless child's face light up when given a pair of brand-new shoes, or an elderly person's eyes sparkle while learning how to use a computer for the first time.

Those are just two of the outcomes of more than 50 service-learning projects undertaken by Bryant students enrolled in "Management Principles and Practice"(Management 200), a course in which students break into teams to work with area nonprofits.


Lessons from Haiti: Service learning course inspired by “Half the Sky”

Bryant students help Johnston school make connection to Haiti

As part of a management course, a group of Bryant students helped St. Rocco's School in Johnston, R.I., forge a connection with The Haitian Project, a Rhode Island-based organization that supports a Port au Prince school for children who may not otherwise be afforded an education.

A national park for the Blackstone Valley

As part of the service-learning component of their "Management Principles and Practices" course, a group of Bryant students are collaborating with the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission in an effort to name the corridor a national park. One student, Sara Larrabee of Cranston, R.I., wrote this commentary for the Johnston (R.I.) Sun Rise. It also appeared in the Cranston Herald and as a letter to the editor in The Valley Breeze.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Corporation for National and Community Service honored Bryant University today with a place on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America's communities. It is the second consecutive year Bryant has received the honor.
