Military health care offers lessons for civilian side, marketing professor says

The civilian medical world could learn a lot from U.S. military medicine, whose operations allow doctors to deliver care with great efficiency, according to global supply chain expert Michael Gravier, assistant professor of marketing.

"The military in some ways is quite far ahead of the civilian world of health care. They have a plan, and they have the means to impose order on the many moving parts that are needed to deliver good health care," Gravier told Defense News. Gravier is a former U.S. Air Force major with 12 years in the service, and much of his research has focused on culling best practices from military health care.

Restaurant industry is holding steady

Expect moderate growth in the Ocean State's restaurant business, Elaine Notarantonio, professor of marketing, tells the Providence Business News. "People are really tired of the recession," she says, and are now willing to spend "more money on experiences" like dining out.

 But though the industry appears to be holding steady, R.I. restaurants still have hurdles to overcome — declining wages and a growth rate that lags behind national figures, Edinaldo Tebaldi, assistant professor of economics, notes.

Alumna finds high-heel fashion success with hand-painted shoes

This feature takes a look at the path recent graduate Mallory Musante took to launch her hand-painted shoe business.

"I originally went to Bryant thinking I'd get a corporate job," she said, but after seeing Hilary Swank's character take a shoemaking class in P.S. I Love You, "everything changed. It's a great combination of my passions. I get to be creative through the design part, but also get to use the business side of me."

Musante is an example of how Bryant students can have an impact "right out of the box," says Bryant "start-up coach" Sandra Potter.

International conference honors two faculty members for their creative teaching methods

Butler SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - The International Conference on College Teaching and Learning has honored two Bryant University faculty members for their creative teaching methods.

Allison G. Butler, Ph.D., (left) assistant professor of applied psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, received a Distinguished New Faculty Award. (Recipients have three years or less of full-time teaching.) Jane McKay-Nesbitt, Ph.D., (below) assistant professor of marketing in the College of Business, received an Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology.

Butler's educational psychology expertise enabled Bryant to expand its course offerings, and she is at the forefront of the University's development of a teacher education program. She has conducted research on the use of popular films in educational psychology and made a presentation on the topic during the conference. "While using class time to show popular films is a pedagogical risk, engagement and learning data suggest it is one worth taking," she says.

Students of McKay-Nesbitt are fans of the way she incorporates a variety of instructional methods and her real-world experiences (she worked in banking in Canada before pursuing her doctorate) in her classroom. Regular use of clickers, team competitions and video case studies are among the reasons she receives strong teaching evaluations. During the conference, she presented a session on the art of engaging students.
