Bryant biochemist among 26 R.I. scientists receiving grant for collaborative research

The Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) has awarded a $200,000 research grant to a team of scientists that includes Bryant University biochemist Christopher Reid.

New tools provided by Lenovo help faculty in the Department of Science and Technology redefine the classroom, according to this case study from Lenovo. Such hardware enables faculty and student collaborations on mapping projects with environmental NGOs, conservation commissions, state agencies, land trusts, and even the Audubon Society.

New English bulldog mascot will help greet first-year students, transfer students and new biochemistry professor
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - One incoming student appeared in "One Hour Photo." Another carried the Olympic torch in Beijing. Sixteen new students are from India and eight are from Ghana. They and more than 900 other first-year and transfer students will be welcomed into the Bryant University community on Wednesday, Sept. 8, as part of the University's Opening Convocation.
The event begins at 3 p.m. with a procession of faculty, administrators and new students who will parade past the Archway where President Ronald K. Machtley and Ironclad Tupper 1, Bryant's new bulldog mascot, will greet them. The procession then enters a tent on the campus green where Vice President for Academic Affairs José-Marie Griffiths will preside. President Machtley, who has been at the helm of Bryant for nearly 15 years, will present an address titled "Character: The Heart of a Bryant Education."
(Heavy rain will cancel the procession.)

New program focuses on integrative biology, intensive laboratory research
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Bryant University is launching a new major, the bachelor of science in biology.
What sets the Bryant biology major apart is an intensive research program that cuts across disciplines, said Jose-Marie Griffiths, Ph.D., the University's vice president for academic affairs. After working with the Department of Science and Technology faculty who teach environmental science, botany, chemistry, biotechnology and cellular biology, the biology major will work one-on-one with faculty mentors to develop an independent research project. Some of these projects may culminate in scientific papers suitable for publication or presentations at major scientific conferences.
Bryant faculty collaborate with Lenovo to refine tablet PCs for the classroom

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Apple may be getting attention this week for the launch of a new wave of tablet computers, but tablet PCs have been available for several years.
For about a year Bryant University, in partnership with Lenovo, has been putting Lenovo tablet PCs through their paces in the classroom, the laboratory, and out in the field. Feedback from Bryant faculty and students is helping Lenovo refine its tablet for use by others in higher education.
