SMITHFIELD, R.I. - On the day that celebrated Bryant University's graduating seniors, the cheering was loudest for the most senior man on campus.
Louis Zamperini, 94, whose life of sacrifice, unrelenting courage and forgiveness has inspired generations of people around the world, received two standing ovations from the 813 graduates and guests who were taking part in the University's 148th Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 21,
A World War II veteran and POW camp survivor, Zamperini received the University's inaugural Distinguished Character Award over the weekend. He also received one of five honorary degrees presented by the University. The other four recipients were Daniel F. Akerson, CEO of General Motors; Ellen Alemany, chairwoman and CEO of Citizens Financial Group, Rabbi Leslie Gutterman of Temple Beth-El in Providence, and Roger Mandle, executive director of the Qatar Museums Authority and former president of Rhode Island School of Design.
Akerson delivered the Commencement address at Saturday's ceremony, Zamperini was the featured speaker during the interfaith Baccalaureate service Friday, May 20, and Mandle was the guest speaker at the Graduate School of Business Commencement ceremony Thursday, May 19. Honorary degrees will be presented to Daniel Akerson of General Motors, Ellen Alemany of Citizens Financial Group, Rabbi Leslie Gutterman of Providence's Temple Beth-El and World War II veteran and POW survivor Louis Zamperini.
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Daniel Akerson (left), chairman and CEO of General Motors, will address 813 graduating seniors and their guests at Bryant University's undergraduate Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 21.
A procession of students, faculty, administrators, Board of Trustees members, and the honorary degree recipients begins at 9:30 a.m. on the Bryant University campus. The ceremony, held under a large tent, begins at 10 and is expected to end at 12:30 p.m. The ceremony will be webcast live.

Akerson and Mandle will receive honorary degrees, as will Ellen Alemany of Citizens Financial Group, Rabbi Leslie Gutterman of Temple Beth-El in Providence, and World War II veteran/POW survivor Louis Zamperini, subject of the best-selling biography Unbroken.
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Daniel Akerson, chairman and CEO of General Motors, will address Bryant University's graduating seniors and guests and will receive an honorary degree during the University's undergraduate Commencement Saturday, May 21. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the University campus, 1150 Douglas Pike.
Akerson's honorary degree is one of five to be presented by the University this year.
