PBN’s ‘40 Under Forty’ winners includes Bryant professor, four alumni

Alex Perullo, associate professor of  anthropology, ethnomusicology and African studies, is among this year's winners of the Providence Business News'  "40 Under Forty" awards. He was selected for his research achievements and contributions to the state, including the African Studies Workshops.

In addition, the following Bryant alumni join Perullo on this year's winners list: Jessica David, RI Foundation, MBA; Anthony Mangiarelli, Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co., Ltd., MA '07 and BA '99; Basem Neseim, FM Global, '03, and Louis Simon, Sullivan & Co., MS '09 and BS '97.

Alejandro Vando is first Bryant U. student to receive R.I. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Alejandro Vando '13, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will spend 10 weeks this summer immersed in a biochemist's world of DNA, proteins, and bacteria.

As one of 25 winners of a Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), Vando will work alongside Christopher Reid, Ph.D., an assistant professor in Bryant's Department of Science and Technology. Vando will be a partner in Reid's proteomics research. Specifically, Vando will be involved in gene amplification, a laboratory method for creating multiple copies of small segments of DNA that encode protein. He'll learn how to clone a gene and how to express, purify and begin characterization of the encoded protein. At the end of July, he will present his findings at a SURF conference.


2001 alumnus among Charlotte Business Journal’s ‘40 Under 40′ winners

John Bly, who received a B.S.B.A. in accounting and computer information systems in 2001, is among the people selected to receive the Charlotte Business Journal's "40 Under 40″ awards. Bly is a founding partner of the CPA firm Toler, Bly & Associates.

Bryant junior wins national fellowship to help expand her role as mentor

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  — The passion one Bryant University junior has for mentoring has been kicked up a notch thanks to a national program to help first-year college students thrive in their new surroundings.

Christina Knips '12, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., was one of just five university students from around the country to receive a fellowship to attend the 30th annual Conference on the First-Year Experience, which each year offers expert keynote speakers and workshops during which participants can share ideas, research and experiences.


Bryant first-year student wins ‘outstanding attorney’ award at regional tournament

Confucius Institute seeks nominations for award honoring efforts to promote study of Chinese language, culture

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Confucius Institute at Bryant University, in partnership with the computer maker Lenovo, is accepting nominations for the Bryant Confucius/Lenovo Achievement Award.

The award, which recognizes an individual or organization for outstanding contributions in promoting Chinese language and culture in Southern New England, will be presented during the University's Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday, Feb. 6. The prize is the newest model of Lenovo's IdeaCentre desktop computer.


Washington Trust Company Scholarship awarded to Joseph Heiberger

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Joseph Heiberger '11 of Westerly, a finance major at Bryant University, has been awarded the Washington Trust Company Scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year.

The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate from southern Rhode Island in good academic standing.


Smith Ellsworth Memorial Scholarship awarded to Jennifer Juhr

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - Jennifer Juhr '11, a business management major from North Smithfield, R.I., has been awarded the Jill D. Smith Ellsworth Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year.

The scholarship is given each year to a nontraditional female student. Juhr is a commuter student.


President and Mrs. Machtley honored by R.I. State Council of Churches
