Bryant economist presents R.I. economic outlook to NEEP
November 17th, 2010
Edinaldo Tebaldi, assistant professor of economics, today presented a report (available as a .pdf here), "The Rhode Island Economic Outlook and Forecast: A Strategy for Reducing the State Budget Deficit," at the Fall 2010 Economic Outlook Conference held by the New England Economic Partnership (NEEP). Tebaldi co-wrote the report with Edward M. Mazze, Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration at the University of Rhode Island.
"With the lack of federal stimulus funds, Rhode Island will face a significant budget deficit in FY 2012," the pair write. "The solution to the deficit problem will be to start at the beginning: everything comes up for review. Zero-based budgeting and a strategic planning process need to be used by every state government department and then implemented by city and local governments. Changing government fiscal and operational behavior are long-term activities."
The report also includes forecasts in the following areas:
- state macroeconomics
- consumer delinquencies and bankruptcies
- fiscal responsibility in state budgeting
