Chinese New Year Festival Feb. 7 features dazzling art troupe from China

SMITHFIELD, R.I.  - A dazzling performance of music, dance, and martial arts by the award-winning Art Troupe of the High School Affiliated with Renmin University of Beijing, China (above), will provide the grand finale at Bryant University's Chinese New Year Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The celebration welcoming the Year of the Ox will be held from 10:30 a.m. through 3 p.m. in the University's Multipurpose Activities Center (MAC), 1150 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, R.I. More than 1,000 people attended Bryant's Chinese New Year celebration last year.

Admission is free and open to the public. Lunch is available for $7.

The festival also will include performances by local community groups and the presentation of the new Bryant Confucius/Lenovo Achievement Award, which was created by the Confucius Institute at Bryant University and Lenovo to recognize an individual or group for outstanding efforts to promote the study of the Chinese language and culture in Southern New England.

The art troupe, first established in 1950, has performed throughout the world. Its teenage members, who are among the high school's top students, have been called cultural ambassadors of China.

The Chinese New Year celebration is co-sponsored by Bryant University's U.S.-China Institute and Confucius Institute, the Rhode Island Association of Chinese Americans, Cathay Bank, and the United States Postal Service.
