Economist urges investment in improving society; Jeffrey Sachs says Bryant’s balance of business, liberal arts is ‘what our society needs’

May 20th, 2012 | Providence Journal

In its coverage of Bryant's graduation ceremony, the Providence Journal notes that renown economist Jeffrey Sachs, who spoke to the graduates, called Bryant's expectation "that business students minor in liberal arts and liberal arts students minor in business administration 'just what our society needs.'"

"Go forward not just to add to shareholder value, but to true global value," Sachs said. "Lobby not for tax breaks but for human survival. Create social networks not for the benefit of tricky advertisers collecting ever more information out of personal behavior, but for the benefit of society to address our greatest challenges. If you do these things, you will enrich your lives, preserve the planet and fulfill the highest purposes of education."
