This past week in China has been one that was different from all of the rest. That is because it was the first time that we took a side trip while we were in Wuhan. The trip was to the Three Gorges Dam and a paper mill in Yichang. The trip was a different experience because of the various people that we met and the different places that we went. Classes this week are picking up the pace and becoming more in depth. A majority of Friday afternoon was spent at the mall and we learned the real value of shopping in China. Read More...
Three Gorges Dam

June 22This past week at school has continued on in much of the same fashion as before. With early mornings and long days of school, work, and homework my schedule is quite busy. I have been concentrating on stability and consistency with my daily routine, trying to eat healthy and exercise often. I feel that this will allow me to enjoy the time I have here in China to the best of my abilities. I feel that I have been learning Chinese language, history, and culture at a very rapid pace, and I am enjoyed with the practical results. I feel that I am putting an adequate amount of effort into the program and I am being rewarded fairly. I have enjoyed myself immensely, and even though I miss the people at home, I am having a great experience.
An experience I will never forget

This first week in China was something extremely different from what I had imagined. My experience in each of the three cities was something I will never forget.
We stayed in Shanghai for a few days and I was able to learn a lot about China both as a globalized nation and as a nation on the verge of development. The city of Shanghai was an extremely different place than any of the major cities in America. In one part of the city everything seemed so modern from an American stance, but then going just outside of the city still in the Shanghai region (the development zone) it was a drastic change; the buildings were more worn down and people still hand plowed huge fields.

23 hours after traveling half way around the world I arrive in Shanghai and am happy to be back. I met my Chinese friend the first day. It was interesting to talk to her as she gave me great insight into what Chinese young people are like. The second day in Shanghai I stayed with my other friend Jason. We traveled to his father's factory and also went to another local clothing manufacturer. I learned how business was done first hand. Me and Jason then went to a second mall and he helped me buy a new mouse that I really needed. Later that night we joined the rest of the group and enjoyed a wonderful dinner that Mr. Wang paid for.

The long trip from Providence to Shanghai, included two stops, delays and 28 hours of plane and bus rides. By the time I arrived in China, I was thoroughly relieved that I would have a few days or even a few hours where I would be able to relax. However, we did not exactly relax in Shanghai, with only three days to see the most populous city in the most populous country in the world we needed to use our time effectively. Though I had seen many of the sites and places we visited, it was still as impressive and enlightening as the first time I went. With such a busy schedule, the time we touched down at Pudong airport to the time we got on the train to Hangzhou was full of great historical and modern sites as well delicious Shanghainese food. We traveled to the Yu Yuan gardens where we were able to take some beautiful pictures. I had been in January and it was not as breathtaking as during the early spring where the abundant plants make the gardens so green, and the flowers dotting the elegant rocks created a picturesque Chinese garden.

During the first week of being out of the United States in China, I saw that there are a lot more pollution in the air here in Shanghai and Hangzhou compared to the United States. The skies here in Shanghai and Hangzhou are gray due to air pollution even when it was supposed to be a sunny day. In the United States, English is the main language used while here in China there were different dialects of Chinese used but Mandarin is understood by majority of the people here. Being in a different country in this case China forces me to remember the words I learned in my Chinese classes back in Bryant.

This has been such an interesting week that included many first time experiences. This is the first time that I have ever been in China, the first time I have ever ridden on a train, the first time it has been necessary for me to speak Chinese in order to get by and the first time ever visiting a textile factory. Shanghai is a bustling city that is full of many opportunities. One of the opportunities available to the residents of Shanghai and the nearby cities is the Shanghai Shenying Textile Ornament Co., Ltd. The company operates under the guidance of Wang Cheng Yao, the general manager. He was gracious enough to allow us to visit the factory and see how the items he sells are actually made. The textile factory in Shanghai was completely different than what I imagined it to be. There are many reasons that the textile factory was not what I imagined it to be. The first is because of its location, the second is because of its workers and their lifestyle, the third is because of the way that Mr. Wang and Mrs. Wang acted around us.
